What’s the difference between a sandwhich maker and a panini maker?

Question by Shay: What’s the difference between a sandwhich maker and a panini maker?
I really like hot sandwhiches and I was thinking about getting either a sandwhich maker or a panini maker. What is the difference? I already have a Foreman Grill – will that do? What I was looking at was a press that uses regular loaf bread, but an actual panini doesn’t use that type of bread does it? I suppose the sandwhich maker is more for just grilled cheeses? And how do you get it toasted? Do you have to smear butter on the bread like when you use a pan? Does anyone have any recommendations? THANKS!

Real panini is a thicker bread, like Texas toast. If you use a thicker bread it won’t fit in a sandwich maker, I have tried. Even large pan breads don’t fit. The panini maker should be able to hold a larger bread.
